Does the prescription medication topamax alter a woman's period?
That's one potential side effect. It can also make birth control pills less effective. If you're noticing any side effects, they may stop after your body becomes more used to the Topamax, but best to discuss the issue with your doctor.
From what I've been reading it can. I was just put on it for migraines again, and I've been reading everything I can about it. Just google it and read everything you can.
Not the prescription dear, however the normal use of Topiramate (Topamax) in normal dose (for example 25 miligrams BD as starting dose) CAN cause some irregularities in the mestrual period. (although it is not a frequent side effect), however it is always wise to discard pregnancy BEFORE starting to use such a complex substance, because it is toxic to the liver of the embryo, the use of Topamax for very many indications (epilepsy, peripheral inflamation of the nerves or neuritis) is quite all right if supervised by your doctor, however, among the very many side effects, are alterations in the regularity of the menses...The final answer is YES, it can, and it has been reported before..
Cheers and hope you get better
Topamax can cause dysmenorrhea according to Micromedex.
(Dysmenorrhea - cramps or painful menstruation, involves menstrual periods that are accompanied by either sharp, intermittent pain or dull, aching pain, usually in the pelvis or lower abdomen)
